In the midst of excitement, protests, riots, and angry Instagram videos and other social media posts, many overlooked something that was a big deal. God was mentioned…many times as a matter of fact…during the inauguration. Continue reading “BASIC Update 1-25-17”

Take a moment today to read Psalm 136. Despite what people say regarding the evil and angry God of the Old Testament, the Psalmist seems to share a picture of God that’s a little different. It’s a picture of God in his “steadfast love”. God is just, but he loves faithfully. God is faithful in his love and we see that most clearly as he sheds his own blood on Calvary’s cross. We see the God of all creation showing such love as to give his own life for his creation. But he didn’t stay dead. Instead, that steadfast love continues today as he reigns in all things. We still teach husbands and wives to be faithful to one another. We still pray to the one true God. What once was normal is now seen as resistance. Keep resisting and live the life you were called to in baptism. (Ephesians 5-6) Continue reading “BASIC Update 1-11-16”

This upcoming Sunday we remember the baptism of Jesus. We remember when Jesus stood in the place of sinners, even receiving the baptism that they need so that in the waters of baptism we can be made clean from all sins.

In Psalm 103:12 we hear that, “as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.” And in Micah 7:19 we hear, “He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” What a beautiful promise made to the people of Israel and then seen in the waters of baptism when our sins are washed away on account of Christ. Your sins are gone and you have been made free! Praise be to God.
